Specializing in labor and employee benefits law, Hammond and Shinners, P.C. represents a large number of unions and Taft-Hartley trust funds in a wide array of industries including construction, utilities, transportation, and service.
The firm was founded in 1979. Cary Hammond and Richard Shinners were founding partners along with Jerome Diekemper.
In 1983, Hammond and Shinners, P.C. expanded into the area of workers’ compensation law. Joseph Larrew, Ann Dalton and Bob Mandava represent injured workers in a large number of occupations.
Cary Hammond passed away in January 2013 and Jerome Diekemper withdrew as a principal in June 2006 and is now practicing as an arbitrator/mediator. Since its inception, the firm has specialized in labor and employee benefits law.
Rick Shinners, the firm’s Managing Principal, along with Greg Campbell, Janine Martin, Emily Perez, Mary Lindmark, and Dan McLaughlin are all actively involved in labor law and/or employee benefits law.
Dan McLaughlin joined the firm as a partner in 2022 bringing his expertise in counseling to health & welfare funds, as well as pension funds and various other jointly trusteed labor-management funds in the areas of ERISA compliance, ERISA litigation, delinquency collections, and subrogation. Dan also provides general consultation to labor organizations and its members in all matters relative to their rights and duties under the NLRA and LMRA with a focus on contract negotiations, representation of the local and its members in grievance hearings, arbitrations, and litigation.
Melissa McLaughlin also joined the firm as an associate in 2022 contributing her experience in probate and estate planning as well as business and transactional law. She will expand her practice to include labor and employee benefits, as well as representation of political subdivisions.
The firm also has a probate and estate planning area with three lawyers, Rick Shinners, Bob Mandava, and Melissa McLaughlin, who handle all aspects of estate planning and probate matters.
